Vermin can contaminate loft insulation with droppings, urine and nesting material, while also disturbing or damaging the insulation itself. Once affected, the existing material should not simply be covered with a new layer, as contamination and odours may remain hidden underneath.
Carbon Zero Solutions provides a complete loft insulation removal and cleaning service following vermin activity. Rolled insulation is carefully bagged, while loose-fill materials are removed using a dedicated high-capacity vacuum extraction system. As registered waste carriers, we transport the removed insulation through the correct, documented waste route for disposal at an authorised facility.
Visible droppings, nesting material and contaminated debris are then cleared from accessible areas before the loft is treated with antibacterial and vermin-deterrent sprays. Accessible entry points can also be blocked using stainless-steel wool or mesh, with fresh insulation installed immediately or during a separate second stage.
The removal method depends on the insulation present. Rolled or quilt insulation is carefully bagged before being removed, while loose-fill insulation is extracted using a dedicated high-capacity vacuum system. A large hose transfers the material directly from the loft into a collection bag in our vehicle.
Once the insulation has been removed, visible droppings, nesting material and contaminated debris are vacuumed from accessible areas. The loft is then treated with an antibacterial spray, with particular attention given to areas where contamination has been concentrated.
An anti-vermin treatment is also applied, providing a deterrent for up to three months. Where practical, visible accessible entry points are blocked using stainless-steel wool or mesh, including larger openings and suitable exposed cavity-wall tops.
Reinsulation in One Stage or Two
Once the contaminated insulation has been removed and the loft has been cleaned and treated, fresh insulation can be installed as part of the same project. This provides a complete removal and replacement service without unnecessarily prolonging the work.
Alternatively, the project can be completed in two stages. We can carry out the removal, cleaning, treatment and blocking of accessible entry points first, leaving the loft clear for electricians, plumbers, roofers or other trades to complete any required work.
A planned pause also allows the loft to be monitored for further signs of vermin activity before new insulation is introduced. When the property is ready, our team can return to install suitable new loft insulation.
During the survey, we will discuss the condition of the loft and help determine whether completing everything together or separating the work into two stages is the most appropriate option for the property.
Not always, but insulation contaminated with droppings, urine or nesting material may need to be removed rather than covered over. During the survey, we will assess the condition and extent of the affected insulation before recommending the appropriate work.
Yes. Any active infestation should be dealt with by a suitable pest-control professional before the contaminated insulation is removed. Our service focuses on insulation removal, loft cleaning, treatment and blocking visible accessible entry points where practical.

We cannot guarantee that vermin will never return. However, visible accessible entry points can be blocked where practical using stainless-steel wool or mesh. We also apply an anti-vermin treatment designed to provide a deterrent for up to three months.
Yes. We can remove, clean and treat the loft first, then return to install fresh insulation later. This allows time to monitor for further activity or lets electricians, plumbers, roofers and other trades complete their work while the loft is clear.
