Finding old insulation in a loft does not automatically mean it needs ripping out before anything else can be done.

That gives a much better basis for deciding whether to retain, repair, top up or replace.

Before removing old loft insulation, check:

  • Whether the material is actually wet or merely old
  • Whether most of the existing coverage remains intact
  • Whether only small areas have been disturbed
  • Whether storage or boarding has caused compression
  • Whether ventilation routes remain clear
  • Whether another trade needs access beneath the insulation
  • Whether any contamination is present
  • Whether useful existing material could form part of a new insulation build-up

Keeping useful insulation can be the better job

There is no benefit in removing serviceable material simply to create the appearance of starting again.

In many lofts, the best result comes from understanding what already exists and improving it intelligently.

Sometimes that means complete replacement.

Sometimes it means local repairs.
