Post-war, 1970s and 1980s homes are common across Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire and surrounding counties.
Many of these properties may already have some insulation.
That can be useful, but it can also create a false sense of certainty.
Existing insulation is not the same as effective insulation.
Material may be thin, compressed, disturbed, patchy, damp, poorly detailed or no longer suited to how the home is used.
Quick answer: post-war, 1970s and 1980s homes may already have insulation, but it is still worth reviewing. Existing loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, floor insulation, pipework, tanks, storage areas and later extensions should all be checked before assuming the home is performing as well as it could.
Why existing insulation deserves a second look
Many homes from this period have had insulation work carried out at some point.
That might include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, pipe lagging, tank jackets or insulation added during later alterations.
But insulation can be affected by age, storage, water leaks, ventilation issues, building work and general disturbance.
A home may technically be insulated while still having weak points that affect comfort and performance.
That is why the condition of the insulation matters, not just whether it exists.
Retrofit areas worth reviewing
Loft insulation
Older loft insulation may be thin, patchy, compressed or disturbed. Suitable traditional insulation may be worth reviewing where the loft is accessible.
Cavity walls
Some homes may already have cavity insulation, while others may still need a suitability check for cavity wall insulation.
Floors and voids
Where floors, garages or voids affect comfort, underfloor insulation may be worth checking depending on the construction.
Storage pressure
Loft boards, boxes and stored items can compress insulation or disturb the thermal layer.
Pipework and tanks
Pipe lagging, tank insulation and access to services should be considered during any loft review.
Sloping areas
Dormers, chalet-style sections or rooms partly in the roof may need skeilings insulation checks rather than a standard loft-only approach.

Loft insulation and storage often clash
Post-war and later family homes often use the loft for storage.
That is practical, but it can affect insulation.
If boards are laid directly over insulation, the material may be flattened.
If boxes are placed across loose insulation, depth and coverage can be reduced.
If pipework, tanks or cables are hidden by storage, later maintenance can disturb the insulation further.
A loft review should therefore consider insulation, access, storage, ventilation and services together.
Cavity wall insulation should not be assumed either way
Homes from these decades may or may not have cavity wall insulation already.
Some may have never been filled.
Some may have been filled previously.
Some may have extensions or altered walls with different construction.
The key is to check the wall type, condition and suitability before recommending any work.
Where suitable, cavity wall insulation may be a useful retrofit route, but it should be based on evidence rather than age alone.
Extensions and altered rooms can create new weak points
Many post-war, 1970s and 1980s homes have been extended or adapted.
A garage may have become a room.
A side extension may have been added.
A loft may have been partly converted.
A rear extension may have created a larger living space.
Those altered areas may not match the original property’s insulation or construction.
They should be assessed as part of the whole home, not treated as separate afterthoughts.
Existing insulation review checklist
- Is there existing loft insulation, and what condition is it in?
- Has the insulation been compressed by boards or storage?
- Are ventilation routes clear and working as intended?
- Is there cavity wall insulation, and has the wall condition been checked?
- Are there rooms over garages, voids or unheated areas?
- Are pipework, tanks and services insulated and still accessible?
- Have extensions or alterations changed the way the home performs?
Do not assume existing means adequate
The main retrofit mistake with these homes is assuming the work has already been done properly.
Sometimes it has.
Sometimes it has not.
Sometimes it was suitable at the time but no longer matches the way the home is used.
A second look can help identify whether the property needs a simple top-up, a better storage solution, a wall check, a floor check, a roof-slope assessment or a wider insulation plan.
