Some of the most comfortable homes in winter have a cold loft. That isn’t a mistake — it’s a designed approach. Warmth is held in the rooms below, while the loft stays ventilated and predictable.

In short: cold lofts can be excellent for comfort when detailed properly. warm roofs can be excellent too — but only when designed as a complete system with correct air gap and vapour strategy.

Cold loft comfort: why it works

A cold loft approach keeps insulation at ceiling level. The living space below becomes more stable and comfortable, while the loft void above remains ventilated so the roof structure can dry and behave predictably through winter.

Warm roofs: the complete system approach

Warm roof upgrades can deliver outstanding comfort and performance — but they cannot be treated like a simple “add insulation and seal it” job.

When we build warm roof systems, we deliberately maintain an air gap behind the insulation (often around 40mm) by extending rafters where required, so the roof can still behave correctly. If additional control layers are used, we allow for that detailing too. This is the difference between a system and a shortcut.

What you don’t want to see

  • airflow removed in a roof that still behaves like a cold roof,
  • partial warm roof builds with gaps in vapour and airflow logic,
  • roof layers that can’t dry reliably in any direction,
  • “sealed” roof spaces where moisture becomes unpredictable over time.
