Victorian and Edwardian homes

Victorian and Edwardian houses were typically built using breathable construction methods. Solid brick walls, slate roofs and suspended timber floors were common, and ventilation was built into the structure almost by default.

Airflow beneath suspended floors helped prevent moisture buildup, while ventilated roof spaces allowed timber structures to dry naturally over time.

Because of this design approach, insulation improvements in these homes need to work with that ventilation rather than blocking it.

Many of these properties still have suspended timber floors today, which is why underfloor insulation installed beneath the floor structure is often one of the most effective improvements available.
