Look across the middle of a loft and the insulation may appear deep and continuous.

Follow it towards the edge of the roof and you might notice it becoming thinner, stopping short or apparently disappearing altogether.

Sometimes there is a good reason for that. Sometimes there is simply insulation missing from an awkward part of the loft.

Quick answer: Insulation may appear to be missing around the edge of a loft because the eaves can contain important ventilation routes, restricted working space or older areas that were difficult to insulate. However, genuine gaps can also occur through poor installation, later disturbance or storage. The reason should be understood before more insulation is pushed into the space.

The edge of a loft is not the same as the middle

The centre of a loft is usually the easiest part to see and work within.

Move towards the edge and the roof slopes down towards the external walls, creating the area known as the eaves.

Headroom reduces, access becomes more difficult and parts of the roof ventilation arrangement may also be located there.

Why shouldn’t insulation simply be pushed as far as possible?

An irregular patch several feet back from the perimeter is less likely to be there for ventilation.

Look at the pattern rather than one small gap

A useful loft assessment considers how the insulation behaves across the entire ceiling.

Is the centre evenly covered?

Does the material reach towards the perimeter consistently?

Are gaps linked to services or storage?

Is the eaves area clearly being used for ventilation?

Those questions tell us much more than the presence of one visible strip of ceiling.

If insulation appears to be missing around the edge, check:

  • How the roof space is ventilated

  • Whether insulation has been moved around cables or pipes

The gap itself is only half the information

Seeing bare ceiling near the edge of a loft is worth understanding.

But the sensible solution depends on why it is bare.
